2007 Recap

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

It seems making a recap post of the year is the thing to do right now in the blogosphere. Who am I to break the trend?

I started this blog just over a year ago. As 2007 rolled around, I set two goals for myself.

  • To earn $10 a day by the end of the year
  • To average at least one post a week on every blog I have

The first goal was met at some points in the year, but I am currently not earning $10 a day consistently. From all of my online endeavors, I did average more than $10 a day (or $3,650 for the year). That really wasn’t my goal, so I would say I failed at that one.

The second goal was certainly met on this blog. Despite my hiatuses every now and again, this is my 95th post on RevenueQuest and my 82nd of 2007. I have some other blogspot blogs that I basically ditched when I realized there was almost no money to be made with them.

I’d say I went 1 for 2 on my 2007 goals. More important than achieving those goals however, I can see that I have learned a lot in a year. For one, I understand and respect affiliate marketing a lot more than I used to. I was under the impression that most affiliate marketers don’t put in much work (Beach Bum) and that simply is not the case. I also have learned that I spend way too much time on this blog talking about things I am thinking about doing or eluding to posts that never get done. It reminds me of all those Hollywood star shows like Access Hollywood and Extra that spend most of the show telling their audience what they are going to be telling them after the break instead of just saying it.

January

I got pissed off at one of those affiliate programs like Cash Crate and made an affiliate program pledge. Ironically, the “legit” programs I mention in that post have all gone under or I am not using anymore. Oh well, I had good intentions.

While surfing the ‘net one night, I noticed Google Adsense video ads seemed to be showing up all over the place. By “all over the place” I mean three blogs.

I came up with three ideas for creating a new blog. I think this was my most informative post up until that point.

February

I was starting to lose hope in Agloco. Why did it take them so long to get that viewbar out?

Bidvertiser met its match with my most popular post to date (according to the Wordpress plug in Popularity Contest)… Please avoid Bidvertiser

AdBrite launched a video platform and then we never heard of it again.

I started reading Earnersblog.

I found my first #1 keyword on Google.

I listened to the search engines and wrote about how RevenuePilot works.

March

If Digital Point forums traffic is good enough for Shoemoney, it is good enough for me.

April

Finals must have been fast approaching…

RevenueQuest homepage reached a page rank of two.

AuctionAds exploded.

I got an ACTUAL JOB! And it was in the Industry.

I started using PayPal’s money market fund. This works nicely with Yahoo! Publisher Network’s new $50 payment option.

June

PayPerPost rejected me.

YPN began smart pricing. Probably the nail in the coffin for many publishers that had bad experience with YPN.

Matt Coddington sold Net Business Blog for $50k. I think the quality of posts are still great.

I started using Azoogle to promote ringtones. I made a few bucks and learned a lot.

July

I wrote about an easy way to increase your Alexa ranking.

I started using Shopping.com’s API.

August

Google launches Adsense-Maps advertisements.

Some things to remember when updating to a new Wordpress theme.

September

I knew it was going to be a tough semester…

October

I got back into the affiliate thing and set new records.

Some tips on using Zip submits. Probably my most in depth and lengthy post.

BelowABuck. Remember Shoemoney’s little launch of that site? There is a nice timeline of how they did it in less than three hours of work.

Now and always in Alexa’s top 1-million.

John Chow launches TTZ Media just as I was making some progress on my Shopping.com ad.

Finally got into PayPerPost. Still no requests for a review. :(

Google is going to pass up Yahoo! on Alexa soon.

November

Finals were just around the corner…

December

My first $100 in a month with one affiliate network.

I will have 2008 goals soon.

$100 in a Month with One Network

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Today was the first time I have ever reached the century mark with one network in a month. As of now, I have $105 for my December balance with Incent-a-Click. I am currently using Zip and Email submit offers with them as described here.

This new feat comes just a few days after the one year birthday of RevenueQuest. Ideally, I would like to continue this growth and make a couple hundred dollars from a few different networks.

What is the most you have made from one network in a month?

School’s Out for Winter!

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Not quite as exciting as the Summer version, but it is nice to be done with another semester nonetheless. Now I have a month to make some money online before next semester starts.

RevenueQuest’s Anniversary

It’s been a year since my first post on RevenueQuest. Since then, things have changed a lot. Maybe in the next few days I can do a little recap of my first year blogging.

Free Tech Gear from Take My Tech

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Who doesn’t like winning free stuff? Better yet, who doesn’t like a 1-in-100 chance of winning free stuff? Enter Take My Tech.

Take My Tech is a new blog by Jason Burns (owner of Philoking.com) that gives away tech gear. Since the blog’s launch just over a month ago, six items have been given away, including routers, a backpack and an ATI video card, among other things.

Most of the giveaways only require a comment on the post to be entered in the drawing. A few giveaways are run in a contest format like this one for a Microsoft Wireless Media Center keyboard that requires pictures of your home theater setup. Once there are 100 entries in the giveaway/contest, a winner is chosen.

Not bad odds.

Some of the giveaways that are closest to reaching their 100-entry threshold are,

How long till Google passes Yahoo!?

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

If you have ever done some browsing on Alexa’s traffic rankings, you’ll notice Yahoo! is ahead of Google as the #1 most visited site in the world. For myself, I was a little shocked the first time I saw this. I rarely use Yahoo! anymore. Yahoo! used to have a big advantage of Google with services like Yahoo! Mail, but Gmail and the rest of Google Labs (Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Docs, etc.) are among the most popular internet services out there today.

How could Yahoo! still be ranked ahead of Google?

While looking at Alexa’s top-500 list, I noticed that in addition to Google.com, the list includes Google Brazil, Google Germany, Google UK and others. I took a look at the Yahoo! equivalents of these country-specific sites. Yahoo.com.br sends you to br.Yahoo.com. Yahoo.de sends you to de.Yahoo.com.

This redirect Yahoo! has set up sends most of their international traffic to a sub-domain on Yahoo.com. The Alexa ranking system does not have different rankings for each sub-domain. Alexa counts all of the redirected traffic on the Yahoo.com domain. Considering that less than 20% of internet users are in the US, that could be enough traffic to put Yahoo! over Google.

That’s better than my idea to raise Alexa rankings.

Can Google’s US traffic overcome Yahoo!?

If you take a look at Alexa’s graph of Yahoo! vs Google, Google is closing in on Yahoo!. In fact, Google recently passed MSN as the #2 site in the world. That accomplishment becomes even more impressive when you consider that nearly every PC running Windows has MSN set as the default home page on Internet Explorer.

My prediction is that we will see Google finally (and perhaps rightfully) take over Yahoo! in 2008. When do you think it will happen?

Take Advantage of Google’s Ever-Growing Popularity

Get Rich With GoogleDon’t miss out on Google’s eventual total-domination of the internet. There are programs out there that will help you get rich banking on Google’s success. This one offers a free trial that only requires a shipping and handling charge. You might want to give it a try.

Don’t Throw in the Towel with AuctonAds

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

If you are thinking about giving up on AuctionAds, read this post at EarnersBlog. Like everyone complaining about AuctionAds lately, he saw a dramatic decrease in revenue and CTR after the first couple of months.

  1. Revenue was great in June (< $1,000)
  2. Half of June’s numbers in July (> $1,000)
  3. Half of that again in August (> $200)
  4. September beat July’s number & things started improving again ( > $1,000)
  5. October, well this month isn’t quite over yet but I thought I’d post a quick screenshot:

The screenshot shows that Stuart has made nearly $2000 thus far in October.

I have run AuctionAds very little and the only money I have made with it has been through referrals. (Don’t you love residual income?) After reading Stuart’s post, I think I will continue to run AuctionAds.

Stuart also makes a good point that eBay uses a 30-day cookie which means any winning bid or BIN a user makes in the next 30-days you will get credit for. With the holiday season coming around, this could prove to be very profitable. All you have to do is refer someone that plans on doing all of their holiday shopping on eBay this Winter.
