What I learned on my first day

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in My Life | No Comments »

I started my new job today and I had a good time. That’s right, a good time at work. I guess I should really hold on to this one.

At my first day, I learned…

  1. With the right focus, making money on the internet is possible. It is all about persistence.
  2. I’m a fan of Windows Vista (the computer I am working on has Vista).
  3. There is so much more out there, in terms of revenue potential, besides blogging and affiliate marketing through PPC.
  4. Traffic in Los Angeles really does suck. UPDATED: Of course I mean traffic on the roads, not on the net (the good kind of traffic)

Maybe I will learn some more so I can share my lessons.

A free “best selling” ebook?

Posted on May 30th, 2007 in Blogging | No Comments »

Well I’m not sure how it is possible, but John Chow managed to create a “best selling” ebook (in one day no less!)… that he gave out for free. I’m no publisher, and frankly I don’t think Mr. Chow is either, but I would assume the number one criteria of a “best selling” book (or ebook) is its mass quantity of… sales.

Needless to say, it’s a great idea. You can read about how he is making money with [his] ebook. Basically, with all of the books FREE downloads, he is getting an enormous amount of traffic. Also, embedded in the ebook, you will find several affiliate links where he of course is generating revenue with sign-ups.

As Mr. Chow says, “how evil.”

50 dollar payment option now available via PayPal on YPN

Posted on May 29th, 2007 in Yahoo! Publisher Network | 1 Comment »

For those of you who are using Yahoo! Publisher Network, you can now receive your payments via PayPal. What is great for smaller publishers (like me), you will be paid if your monthly total is $50. This is a $50 decrease from the $100 required with direct deposit and check options.

I just switched mine to the PayPal option and will likely leave it that way. Now I can automatically earn interest on my payments from YPN as I am signed up with PayPal’s Money Market Fund.

Here are some numbers…

Assuming I have $600 in my PayPal account, and I can earn a $50 payout from YPN every month, than with the current interest rate of 5.04%…
In a year I would have earned $47.58 in interest ($1247.58 now in the account)
In two years I would have earned $128.57 in interest ($1928.57 now in the account)
In five years I would have earned $589.62 in interest ($4189.62 now in the account)
And in ten years I would have earned $2205.58 in interest ($8805.58 now in the account)

…and it is all thanks to YPN teaming up with PayPal!

Starting a new job

Posted on May 29th, 2007 in My Life | No Comments »

I have very exciting news! Well, for me anyway. I am starting a new job! And guess what? It is internet related. I will probably be starting later this week. That is all I want to say about it for now.
Hopefully I will be able to learn from the people I am working with and I will be able to apply it to my own internet exploits. I’ll try to keep you updated.

Brainstorm with a friend

Posted on May 27th, 2007 in Tips | No Comments »

Sometimes when I reach writers block or when I am trying to think about new monetization ideas (and I can’t think of anything new), I go talk to or visit a friend and brainstorm with him. It is great getting fresh ideas and building off of each other. I find that it is also a lot more fun working with a partner. At the end of the day, it doesn’t feel like I have been couped up in a room and lost track of the time.

As I write this, I am sitting with a friend, brainstorming, giving each other insight, and having a good time.

For those of you who don’t have friends in the internet world, you may want to try to visit your local internet cafe. Maybe you can pick up a friend there.

Refreshed

Posted on May 26th, 2007 in My Life, Tips | No Comments »

Hey guys. I’m back home from my trip to see a friend at Santa Barbara. I had a lot of fun with him, as I always do. It is funny to see old friends in a new environment and to see who their new friends are.

The trip was definitely a refreshing experience. Since I chose to go to school in Northern Arizona, I have not seen the beach in a while. It was so great to be back again.

But what does this have to deal with making money on the internet? Perspective. I always try to keep things in perspective.

When you are working long hours in front of a computer to try to be the next big thing, try to remember it is ONLY MONEY. It is ONLY THE INTERNET. I definitely get caught up sometimes and probably miss out on being with friends and such. It’s not worth it to be so fixated on something like affiliate marketing or PPC campaigns or Adsense arbitrage. Get out every so often and make sure you do the things you really enjoy.
