Updating Wordpress Theme

Posted on August 23rd, 2007 in Tips, WordPress | No Comments »

I am still in the process of updating the new Wordpress Theme. I have noticed a few things that I forgot to change while making the switch.

Tracking code

If you have any tracking code on your site from services like Google Analytics or Site Meter, remember to add it to your new theme. I manually place my tracking code into the footer.php page, so when I made the switch to this new theme, the tracking code was no longer there. Unfortunately, that means I didn’t get statistics for RevenueQuest for about three days.

Advertisements

Another thing I looked over, this time for only a day or so, was advertisements. Remember that when you change to a new theme, unless it is one of those made-for-Adsense themes, it won’t by default have advertisements on the pages.

Luckily, this new theme I am using has widgets for the sidebar. So now if I ever switch to another theme that is widget ready, I won’t have to worry about adding advertisements to the sidebar.

Plugins and such

Some plugins allow you to manually add code to different pages. For instance, you can add code to each post to display posts that are related. You can see on this blog that each post is given a popularity value. I used to display the most popular posts at the bottom of the main page, but I haven’t added that feature to the new theme yet.

Make sure you take a thorough look through the pages on your blog to see if it is missing any of these things when you make a theme switch.

I’m all moved into my new home for the next 9 months. Now I can get back to making money and finishing up this Wordpress theme switch.

Maybe I’ll take some photos or make a video and show you where I will be working this year.

I’m moving back to school tomorrow so I probably won’t be doing any updates for a couple of days. Flagstaff here I come!

I’m changing my Wordpress theme. I hope you like it. I will be editing it for the next week or so.

“A-Lister” doesn’t have time for me

Posted on August 16th, 2007 in Blogging | No Comments »

For those of you who are following along, I e-mailed an “A-List” blogger a couple of weeks ago regarding the Shopping.com API. I said I would let you guys know how that went. Well, I still haven’t been e-mailed back. I understand that he probably gets a lot of e-mails everyday, but why bother putting up a “contact me” form if you aren’t going to reply?

Not all bloggers are this way. A few months ago, I e-mailed Darren Rowse at Problogger and he got back to me in a timely fashion. I would wager that he is just about as busy as any blogger out there. After all, he is the pro blogger. Also check out Tyler Cruz. He likes to answer e-mails.

New Google Adsense-Maps Advertisement

Posted on August 15th, 2007 in Adsense | 1 Comment »

I just found a new type of Google Adsense ad. As you can see in the pictures, these ads integrate Google Adsense ads with Google Maps and its traffic analysis feature. The traffic is brought to you by the advertiser - in this case Nissan Altima.

Adsense Maps

You can also click on “Coupe nav” and it will let you scroll around the interior of the advertised Nissan Altima Coupe.

Adsense Maps

Google continues to set trends across all internet platforms. It seemed like they were one of the first to be displaying video ads. It will be interesting to see if any other ad networks try to include interactive advertisements in their arsenal.

Found a new #1 keyword

Posted on August 14th, 2007 in Search Engine Optimization | No Comments »

I really love finding new keywords that my sites rankly highly for. There is something about knowing that if anyone were to type this search into Google, they would see my site in the number one spot and, more than likely, pay me a visit.

Anyway, I checked some of the text in the title of my blog. First, I took a look at “revenue earning experiment.” Sure enough, I am number one. I tried cutting down to just “earning experiment” and found that I was number one there too. Unfortunately, I am no where to be found for the term “revenue earning.”

In the past, I have talked about words that I rank for in Google searches. I noticed that after making that post, I bumped up even higher for that keyword. It is something that you may want to try on your blog. The more number one keywords you have, the more traffic you get.
